About the New Mobile Libraries

Since 1940, intermittent bookmobile services had been offered in the city of Worcester. These services played an important outreach role, connecting new users and raising awareness of library services throughout the city. In 1991, the services were discontinued. However, on Monday, June 4, 2012, the Worcester Public Library announced the official launch of its new Mobile Library Branch, Library Express (Libby).

Libby features state-of-the-art equipment and technology, including the use of a touchscreen computer, various tablets, and Mi-Fi hot spots for Internet. The Mobile Library is also ADA-compliant with wheelchair access, and offers low bench seating and an awning for outdoor community meeting space, story times, and other popular programs and events.

Libby serves a variety of people who cannot use their public library in the traditional way. Its service is provided to patrons Monday through Friday, on a four-week rotation schedule. The Mobile Library collection includes popular books, large print books, accelerated reading books, children’s award winners, DVDs, and much more.

Lilly, our second Mobile Library, hit the road on January 8, 2014 as part of the One City, One Library initiative. Lilly contains books, audiobooks, and DVDs for preschoolers through teenagers, as well as storytime kits for parents and caregivers to borrow. There are tablets and a touchscreen computer for patrons to use onboard. Lilly typically visits different sites within a regular four-week schedule.

Most items not found on the Mobile Libraries may be requested through the online catalog, and the requested items will be delivered to you at any of the Mobile Library stops.

In addition to the regular four week schedule, Libby and Lilly are often invited to attend special events throughout the city.
