Oddly Satisfying

Are you obsessed with the #oddlysatisfying videos on social media? Make all of your clay-cracking and kinetic sand-crushing dreams come true in this stress-relieving workshop! See if you have what it takes to create something “oddly satisfying.” For ages 12-17.

Teens can pick up a take-and-make kit for this beginning January 31 at the Goddard Branch Library while supplies last.

What you need to create something #oddlysatisfying at home:

For clay cracking:

- A soft clay
- Clear nail polish
- Toothpick (makes painting the clay easier/less messy)

For kinetic sand cutting/crushing:

- Kinetic sand
- Plastic spoon or knife
- Clear plastic cup
- Optional: melon baller

How to create something #oddlysatisfying:

For clay cracking:

  • Using the pieces of clay, create a shape (circle, heart, donut, cat, etc).
  • Using the nail polish, paint a thin layer all over your clay. Let dry. The toothpick can be used to turn your clay as you paint, so it's less messy.
  • Paint another thin layer. Let dry.
  • Your clay creation will only need 2-3 thin layers of polish.
  • Once it is completely dry, you can smoosh it to get a satisfying cracking sound!
  • Clay can be reused and repainted.

For kinetic sand cutting/crushing:

  • There are many different ways to shape kinetic sand! Here's one way to do it: start by flattening one color of kinetic sand into the bottom of the cup, until it is packed down and even.
  • Pour the other color on top, and do the same.
  • Flip the cup over onto a flat surface, and the sand should pop out. You'll be left with a disc.
  • Using the spoon (or plastic knife if you have one), you can cut your disc in different directions and sizes. This will create a satisfying crunching noise.
  • Sand can be reused as many times as you'd like!

If you have a melon baller, you can scoop the sand into spheres, and drop them into your cup. Using something with a flat bottom (another clear cup could work), you can satisfyingly smoosh the spheres down. This looks really cool if you use two different colors of kinetic sand.
